Children and Adolescents Services


In terms of treatment philosophy and approach, NOVA employs an interdisciplinary model of planning and implementation of training and treatment. Emphasis is placed on diagnostic and symptom management by competent and credentialed staff. NOVA sees training and treatment as a result of a cooperative planning process involving the consumer, family/guardian, and other invested stakeholders. NOVA’s service connectivity gives consumers access to timely step-down opportunities.

NOVA’s target population are children (17 years and younger) with a primary diagnosis of mental illness, emotional disturbance or substance-related disorders, and may also have a co-occurring disorder including developmental disabilities. Consumers need to be able to self ambulate. The funding source for this service is Medicaid, Health Choice or by individualized contract. All candidates for admission must meet medical necessity and be authorized by Value Options to be eligible for this program. Efforts are made to provide homogeneous grouping of consumers to the fullest extent possible.

All applicants will be considered for admission however, preference is given to those consumers from the primary catchment areas of Lenoir, Wayne, Sampson and Duplin counties.

NOVA’s two 12-bed Level IV (Secure) Residential Treatment Facilities began admitting consumers in January 2007 and offers a state-of-the-art approach to secure residential placement for consumers with acute behavior problems and symptoms of mental illness. Our four 6-bed home model provides a non-traditional, non-institutional living experience, emphasizing functional skills development in a clinical/therapeutic milieu. All homes have 24 hour awake supervision and are technologically sophisticated with an access control and video monitoring system to assure security and safety for Consumers. Each home is managed by a Qualified Professional and a Residential Services Supervisor. The homes are operated under stringent State and Federal regulations and standards that are monitored on an annual basis by the Division of Health Service Regulation.

NOVA’s six; 4-bed, Residential Level III group homes provide a highly structured environment. Their small size and community location allows for integration and easy access to programs, services and activities available to the general public. All homes provide 24 hour awake supervision and are operated under stringent State and Federal regulations and standards that are monitored on an annual basis by the Division of Health Service Regulation. Each home is managed by a Qualified Professional and an Associate Professional who serves as the group home manger. All consumers enrolled in the program are provided access to ancillary services that include medical, nursing, dietary, outpatient therapy, psychiatric, pharmacological, and habilitation. NOVA has two licensed therapists available providing individual, family and group therapy. Psychiatric consultation is available monthly. NOVA develops individualized Behavior Treatment Plan to address more intensive behaviors/mental illness symptoms that may place the consumer at risk of injury to self or others.

NOVA recognizes the critical role education plays in changing outcomes for children at risk. Consumers from NOVA’s Level III Residential Program and children from the community participate Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. at NOVA’s Five Points Day Training Center. The facility operates under stringent State and Federal regulations and standards that are monitored on an annual basis by the Division of Health Service Regulation. The Facility is managed by a team of Qualified Professionals and staff with over 25 years of experience in children’s services.

Consumers are involved in a variety of psycho educational training activities designed to increase the ability of the child to relate to others. These activities are also developed to improve functionality within the community and in the mainstream educational setting to prevent hospitalization or placement outside the home. The program offers real world experiences within a therapeutic setting that provides rotating classes that include educational, social and functional skills training, counseling and community access. All consumers receive an individualized program plan developed by an interdisciplinary team that identifies strengths, underdeveloped need areas, and establishes goals to fostering independence. These plans are monitored monthly by the Child Family Treatment Team.

NOVA continues our 22 years of dedication to children and adults with social, emotional and intellectual challenges offers our newest program to the school age population. This program located in Goldsboro, NC will be a collaboration with Eastpointe LME and Wayne County Schools to provide this much needed Alternative Day Treatment for the School aged population.

This alternative program provides Day Treatment for children and adolescents who have a mental illness diagnosis to help them gain stability and to transition back into the public school system. The facility operates under stringent State and Federal regulations and standards that are monitored on an annual basis by the Division of Health Service Regulation.
