Finding a residential program that supports individuals who are both developmentally delayed as well as diagnosed with a mental illness is a challenge many families face without a lot of options. Mental Retardation is just one of the many developmental disabilities. Others include autism, traumatic brain injury, cerebral palsy, and epilepsy. It is the combination of challenges presented by both sides of diagnoses that prevent them from being properly served, as they are often moved around in search of an appropriate placement. Individuals with these dual diagnoses can remain potentially limited not so much by their IQ, but by the maladaptive behaviors stemming from their mental illness. It is only when these individuals are properly diagnosed as a group with very specialized needs, can proper support and treatment regimens be offered.

NOVA serves are those adults (18 years of age and older) who are diagnosed with both Mental Retardation and Mental Illness and who are ambulatory. Due to significant limitations in several adaptive skill areas this population needs a program that requires of them a high level of structure, training to learn a new skill, and supervision that is therapeutic and highly individualized. As this is a Medicaid funded service, consumers do have to meet Medicaid prior approval criteria for an ICF/MR residential placement. NOVA’s team is responsible for assessing eligibility during a screening and then assisting with submitting necessary documents to Specialized Services for prior approval consideration.

NOVA has 8 ICF/MR group homes in and around the Goldsboro, N.C. area. Each home accommodates 6 individuals and is staffed by caring, trained, and competent Habilitation Technicians. The homes are located in communities that allow for community integration with easy access to programs, services, and activities available to the general public. Due to the high level of care all homes provide 24 hour awake supervision and operate under strict Federal regulations and standards that are monitored through annual survey audits by the Division of Health Service Regulation. We have 5 homes that are all male and 3 homes that are co-ed (males and females together, but paired with same sex roommates). Some individuals have their own room, but most have a roommate.
